Frequently Asked Question #1
Why should I learn this?
What do I need math for?
Without a sense of numbers, you can really get taken. Don't let this be you!
Frequently Stated Misconception #1
I think there's a formula for that.
What was it again?
Just tell me the procedure and I'll follow it.
Seven times thirteen equals twenty-eight!?
When we learn a formula that doesn't make sense to us, we don't remember it or know what to do with it. We become robots on an assembly line who don't see the product we are creating. We don't have any way to know if our answer makes sense. Watch Abbott try to follow a procedure he thinks he remembers. I almost believe him along with Costello! How much better off would Abbott be if he understood that dividing means making something into groups and that the groups and/or the number of groups would have to be much smaller than the original? ... or that 7 piles of 13 objects can be counted one-by-one if necessary - demonstrating concretely that 13 seven times is 91, not 28. |

Pa looks ridiculous to us as he cheats himself out of a percentage of the profits in this video. His son tries to give him 75% and split the remaining 25% between he and his brothers.
Pa thinks the math is wrong. If the boys each get the percentage in the split of the 25% that he thinks is correct, how much is left for Ma and Pa Kettle? Send me an email titled "Ma and Pa's Math." In the body of the email, tell me the percentage Pa would be left with and explain how you know your answer is correct. Participation will be rewarded! :-) |

How many months or years would it take you to save for a $1,000 car if you saved...
$30 per week? $50 per week? $100 per week? $200 per month? $475 per month? What if you drove that car for 1 year while you saved for a replacement or a better car? What would you have if you saved... $15 per week? $50 per week? $100 per week? $300 per month? $475 per month? Remember that when you trade up for another car, you still have te remaining value of the $1,000 car, even if it's only for the scrap metal. Use your own numbers. How much are you willing to save every week/month? How much do you want to spend on a car? How long will it take? |
